Shopping is great in Colombo, Sri Lanka’s commercial capital. Places off the beaten path also offer exceptional deals.
Colombo is a shopper’s paradise. From up-market shopping malls and department stores to busy bazaars and street vendors, the Colombo shopping experience is as diverse as the items available for purchase.
Since the island is a world hub for garment production, shoppers may be surprised to find international clothing brands at just a fraction of the overseas price! Department stores Odel Unlimited, House of Fashions, Barefoot Gallery, and Cotton Collection are must-visit venues for clothes shoppers, and shopping malls such as Crescat Boulevard, Majestic City, and Liberty Plaza also feature many clothes and accessories stores.
And drop in at Laksala, Lakmedura, or Lanka Hands if you’re on the lookout for exquisite Sri Lankan handicrafts, pottery, or souvenirs. Paradise Road is world- renowned for its hip, trendy designs and fine art collection.
But for serious bargains, hit the streets of Pettah. The little street markets and wayside stalls sell everything from DVDs to export-quality garments, shoes, leather goods, and electrical goods.
Outside Colombo, Kandy is famous for its high-quality silverware, and Ambalangoda is known for its masks and handicrafts.
Night Life
Colombo is home to many nightclubs, pubs, and casinos catering to night owls.
H2O is the city’s hottest nightspot. Other popular nightclubs are the Blue Elephant, Blue Leopard, The Library, Sequel, Gallery Café, and The Hut. Clancy’s, Sri Lanka’s premier Irish pub, is great fun. Molly’s, Cheers, Breeze Bar, Bistro Latino, and Zanziba are also happening places.
Test your singing ability at Colombo’s popular karaoke lounges or try your luck at Bally’s, Bellagio, or Star Dust casino.
