Most visitors enjoy their holidays under a shady tree or on the beach dozing off while reading a book. And then there is the active type—those who love being outdoors trekking, hiking, rock climbing, or whitewater rafting. Sri Lanka offers plenty of attractions for both types.
Want to try your luck with the ‘Virgin’s Breast’ or the ‘Rib Cage’? These are the names of some of Sri Lanka’s whitewater rapids. Although Sri Lanka may not be as well known as Nepal or Zimbabwe for whitewater rafting, it does offer challenging and exhilarating runs. Kitulgala, 80 km from Colombo, is considered Sri Lanka’s whitewater rafting hub, while the Sitawaka run and the spectacular Kotmale River run keep even the most skillful rafter on his or her toes.
Sri Lanka also offers plenty for trekking and adventure seekers. Trek through the dense jungles and thick foliage, clamber up vertical rock faces, or dive into deep reservoirs—you decide the intensity of your adventure. The Ella adventure park and the Belihul Oya campsite are popular venues for adventure seekers.
Enjoy the experience of a lifetime in a hot air balloon, marveling at the beauty and grandeur of the Sri Lankan countryside. Get a bird’s eye view of the majestic Sigiriya rock fortress and the cultural triangle as the balloon glides through the clear morning sky.
Horseback riding is also an increasingly popular pasttime in Sri Lanka. Ride through lush valleys, dense forests, deserted beaches, or remote villages.
